An unusual airstrike on the Syria-Iraq border overnight caused extensive damage and casualties. Mixed reports are saying that at least 10 and possibly as many as 25 people were killed in the attack.
Some Arab media sources are reporting that Israeli UAVs bombed pro-Iran militia sites and a convoy of fuel tankers heading into Syria. An American official confirmed to a BBC journalist that a strike took place but denied that the US was behind it.
Israeli media outlets called the attack “mysterious” and noted that there was no official comment from Syria or Israel so far. There are unconfirmed reports that several Iranians died in the strike.
The Israeli Air Force previously operated in eastern Syria to reduce Iran’s massive military buildup in the area. The Iranians set up bases and strongholds in the region and transferred weapons to friendly militias, including high-precision missiles that can hit Israel.
Notably, the IDF constantly monitors developments in Syria via a high-tech war room that receives intelligence from multiple sources such as radars and Israel’s spy satellites. The army also coordinates its Syria operations with the United States via a joint command room.
